What is Spleen?
The spleen is an organ found in almost all vertebrate animals. It mainly acts as a filter for purifying the blood, removing microbes and worn out or damaged red blood cells. It is also an important organ in the immune system, producing the white blood cells that fight infection and synthesize antibodies.
Although the spleen is important for many functions in the body, the spleen is not vital to survival and it is possible to live without a spleen. Without the spleen, other organs in the body (particularly the liver) adapt and increase their ability to fight infection and remove redundant red blood cells.

- Left upper abdominal pain with tenderness
- Confusion
- Light headedness

Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura
Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is a disorder that can lead to easy or excessive bruising and bleeding due to low levels of platelets which help in clotting of blood.
Cause

- Easy bruising (Purpura)
- Petechiae usually on lower legs
- Fatigue
- Spontaneous bleeding from nose
- Bleeding gums
- Haematuria or Malaena
- Excessive bleeding from injured site
- Menorrhagia
Diagnosis
- CBC
- Blood Smear
- Bone marrow examination
Treatment
Medical
- Corticosteroids
- Intravenous immune globulin (IVIG)
- Thrombopoietin receptor agonists
- Biologic therapy – Rituximab (Rituxan)
Surgery
- Splenectomy in few cases
Complications
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Heavy bleeding during delivery
